FONTANA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A driver was fatally shot on Interstate 10 Freeway in Fontana early Wednesday morning. It was at the end of a dangerous pursuit of a stolen large flat bed truck that was traveling in the wrong direction, California Highway Patrol said.
Interstate 10 was initially closed in both directions this morning for the investigation of the fatal shooting of a suspect. All westbound lanes were reopened shortly after 5:30am. Eastbound lanes were reopened at about 4:30pm.
CHP began chasing the suspect shortly before midnight on the 210 Freeway in the San Bernardino area, where a the flatbed truck was seen heading the wrong way. The chase continued for about an hour. The driver was traveling on the 10 Freeway, going head-on into incoming traffic. CHP officers met the truck with a road block near Sierra Avenue, where the driver attempted a U-turn. As the driver tried to move the the flatbed truck, officers moved in to try to stop him. That’s when officers shot the driver.
CHP officers did perform CPR on the suspect on the freeway next to the truck. Despite life-saving rescue measures, officials said the male suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger who was in the truck was taken into custody with injuries from the shooting.
The truck had been stolen from the 5400 block of Industrial Parkway in San Bernardino, according to San Bernardino Police Department Sgt. John Echevarria. The truck was first spotted in Colton by local police who started chasing it before letting CHP take over the chase.
CHP said, the chase was “extremely dangerous” and needed to end now before it killed an innocent person. No crash happened or innocent victims were injured during this incident. Details of the shooting remained scarce Wednesday and no further details were immediately available.
