PHELAN, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Two people were arrested on Tuesday evening following a vehicle pursuit ending in flames.
A press release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office says they were notified at about 7:30pm on June 22, 2021. Deputies responded to multiple calls of a gray Nissan Altima driving recklessly at Palmdale Road and Highway 395. They attempted to stop a 2006 Nissan Altima that was driven by Alberto Mendoza of Whittier and passenger Joseph Gomez of Huntington Park. Alberto failed to comply with the lawful order from deputies.
The pursuit started traveling on Palmdale Rd near El Evado Rd. They drove through the town of Phelan then turned onto Highway 138. The pursuit lasted about 30 minutes, 34 miles before coming to an end on Highway 138 at Interstate 15 interchange.
The suspects brought the car to a complete stop and lit the car on fire. Both the driver and passenger were inside the car. Deputies safely removed both suspects from the burning car. Suspect received medical treatment for their burns before booked.
Towards the end of the pursuit the passenger threw a loaded, stolen handgun from the car. The handgun was recovered. Both were booked into High Desert Detention Center on suspicion of evading police, possessing stolen property and destroying/concealing evidence.
