Another Lane Closure For The 210 Freeway In Irwindale For 5 Full Days

IRWINDALE, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Second phase of the major stretch of the 210 Freeway in Irwindale will be closed multiple lanes for a full five days starting Wednesday night.

Repairs of the 210 bridge hinge over the San Gabriel River will require a 126-hour closure of the westbound 210 Freeway in Irwindale that will start Wednesday August 17 at 10pm. and is expected to last through Tuesday morning August 23 at 4am*.

The eastbound lanes will be reduce and move over between the 605 Freeway and Irwindale Avenue. During the closure, all eastbound traffic will be diverted onto the westbound freeway, which will be reconfigured to allow three lanes of traffic in each direction.

San Gabriel River Bridge is some 50 years old and while being safe to drive over, certain parts of the bridge have been long overdue for improvements.

During the closure, workers will be replacing two hinges that lock the bridge in place, along with giving the bridge a higher concrete median, new steel rebar and stronger set concrete on two of two, 20-feet-by-90-feet bridge decks.

“The bridge essentially is 811-feet-long. “The challenge in this project is not just the upgrade of the hinges — two hinges — hinge four and six, but we have to do it for the first time in California.”

Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol are anticipating the closure will cause major delays, and are urging drivers to consider working from home during the closure. And if driving is absolutely necessary, taking alternate routes like the 10 or 60 freeways.
