CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A video of a white Volkswagen Passat sedan cutting off a motorcyclist is circulating social media. The internet is taking sides, and find that unsafe decisions were made by both parties.
The video originated from the Pain In The Pass Facebook Group user Clint Leslie, who captured it while driving home on a Friday afternoon just after 4pm November 3, 2023. They were in medium to heavy traffic while splitting lanes, coming up to an white Volkswagen Passat. The VW visibly creeps into the fast lane while traffic was still moving slowly, making the gap too narrow for the biker to safely pass.
This caused the motorcyclist to slam on the brakes locking them up so he wouldn’t hit the back of a vehicle in front of him. The rider was thrown from his bike and hit the center divider wall, as the VW pulls away when the rider crashed. The VW didn’t have damage and was not hit by the bike nor did it stop. Here is a picture of the white VW Passat sedan below.
The motorcycle rider sustained only minor injuries in the collision.
In California lane splitting is legal at a safe speed according to the California Highway Patrol.
In the end, the encounter was an accident for both parties, and the only negative outcome has been internet arguments between people who misidentify where things went wrong. It all started when the VW driver crowded the biker. At the same time, the rider took risks that, while legal or otherwise justifiable, were still risks.
