According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred on northbound Interstate 15 about two mile after the Kenwood Avenue exit, shortly after 7:30pm Saturday April 27, 2024.

It was reported the driver of a silver Acura TL sedan was traveling north hit the large black bear that was trying to across the freeway.

Officials say the bear was killed on impact and the vehicle suffered extensive damage, but there are no reports of any human injuries.

The bear’s remains will be turned over the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on the right shoulder of the freeway.

No citations have been issued to the driver.

Earlier this week, Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area has recently received multiple reports of bear sightings and interactions, particularly in the New Mesa and Old Mesa Campgrounds, park officials stated. The campgrounds are between the lake and Highway 138.
