DAGGETT, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A semi tractor trailer full of frozen chicken caught fire early Friday morning, leading to a full closure of westbound Interstate 40 near Barstow.
California Highway Patrol officials say the fire was reported at about 5:42am on October 4, 2024 at the westbound Lava Wash bridge near the Hidden Springs Road exit on I-40 freeway.
The driver of the semi reportedly seen and smell smoke from the cab and pulled over, discovering a fire in the cab area and the front of the trailer.
The trailer was loaded with frozen chicken, which could be seen as firefighters worked to put out the fire even hours later.
All westbound traffic was utilizing National Trails Highway to go around the incident.
The Lave Wash bridge was affected by the fire and diesel fuel. Caltrans personnel will determine when it is safe to open the roadway for traffic. There is no estimated time of opening. It is our top priority to open the roadway as soon as safe to do so.
No injuries were reported.
