Victorville Man ID who was Killed in a Car Fire on I-15 Freeway Sunday Afternoon

VICTORVILLE, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> The driver of a 1968 Pontiac Firebird killed in a car fire has been identified after he became trapped.

San Bernardino County coroner’s office has ID the driver as Robert Norman, 67-year-old resident of Victorville. The car fire occurred 1:10pm on Sunday, February 9, 2025, near the right shoulder of southbound I-15 just before the Stoddard Wells Road offramp.

The preliminary investigation revealed the car was traveling at an undetermined speed “when for an unknown reason, the engine compartment caught fire,” according to a CHP statement. “The driver attempted to drive the vehicle to the right shoulder, but became disabled in the process, coming to a stop partially within the shoulder, and partially within the slow lane.”

For reasons yet to be determined, he was unable to get out of the burning car, officials said.

According to witnesses, good Samaritans tried to extinguish the fire and help the driver out, they were unsuccessful due to the intense flames.

Robert was the driver and lone occupant of a Black 1968 Pontiac Firebird, which was “fully engulfed” in flames when first responders arrived at the scene, according to CHP Officer Jebediah Wheeler.

Norman died from his injuries at the scene.

The investigation was ongoing, and anyone with information was asked to contact Officer A. Lugo of the CHP’s Victorville Office at (760) 241-1186.
