One Suspect Dead, Another Was Injured In Officer-Involved Shooting In Fontana Ending In A Pursuit In Redlands

FONTANA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> One suspect is dead and another was injured during an officer-involved shooting in Fontana that ended in a pursuit in Redlands Tuesday evening.

An official with the Fontana Police Department said officers were conducting an undercover operation involving the sale of illegal assault weapons at a Jack in the Box located at 3910 Sierra Avenue in North Fontana. The undercover Fontana Police officers approached the black Mazda sedan, at about 5:15pm on Tuesday June 21, 2022. The Mazda had two people inside, one officer noticed a gun inside the vehicle, the driver of the Mazda rammed into the unmarked patrol car. Then Fontana Police fired shots at the car as they took off down Sierra Avenue in Fontana.

The suspect jumped on southbound Interstate 15 with Fontana PD in pursuit. The pursuit went through several cities and freeways. Eventually the police terminated the pursuit by a PIT maneuver on Interstate 10 Freeway at Tennessee Street exit in Redlands about 7:30pm.

The driver was taken into custody. The passenger was found to have at least one gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital where he later died. His name has not been released pending next of kin notification. 

The driver, 27-year-old Fontana resident and convicted felon Adolfo Quintana, was treated by paramedics on scene and was later booked on several felony charges. An unregistered assault rifle was located inside of the suspects vehicle, police said.

The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the California Department of Justice and detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Specialized Investigation Division and the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.

All lanes of the eastbound 10 Freeway were closed until 6:15am Wednesday morning during the ongoing investigation.
