3 People Killed In Wrong-Way Crash On Southbound I-15 In Fontana

FONTANA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Three people were killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 15 in Fontana late Monday night, prompting multiple lane closures during the morning commute.

A witness stated at about 11:40pm Monday October 23, 2022 one of the drivers got on the freeway on Summit Avenue going up the southbound exit ramp the wrong way. Which car was driven by the wrong-way driver was unclear at this time. Then about a minute or two later CHP received of a call of a collision

California Highway Patrol and firefighters from San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the traffic collision. The crash was located on the southbound Interstate 15 near the Sierra Avenue exit.

The two vehicles involved were a red Kia Rio hatchback and a black Honda Civic sedan.

CHP investigators said the errant driver was trying to intentionally hit oncoming vehicles prior to the collision. The driver slammed head on and the Honda erupted in flames.

Both of those individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified only as two residents of Rialto. The other driver also died, were only identified has a 57 year old from Glendale Highway Patrol Sgt. Ryan Robbe said.

CHP issued a Sig Alert for all but one of the southbound lanes, this caused major traffic delays for motorists coming down from the Cajon Pass. All lanes were reopened just after 7:30am. Traffic was backed up for miles causing a traffic nightmare for the morning commute.

Whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident is under investigation.
