SAN BERNARDINO. CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Two California Highway Patrol officers were injured when they were struck by a reported DUI driver in San Bernardino early Sunday morning, authorities said. (Picture above is credit by KeyNews TV)
The two officers were blocking the left shoulder/fast lane of northbound Interstate 215 just before the University Parkway exit, during the investigation of a three vehicle collision prior to the DUI suspect struck the officers patrol car. The first collision took place shortly before 3:30am on Sunday April 22, 2023.
The three vehicle involved were reported on the CHP traffic log were a sliver Hyundai Elantra sedan, a black SUV, and a unknown vehicle description. No major injuries were reported in this crash.
Then about 4:22am a red Jeep Liberty SUV struck the back of the CHP patrol car at about freeway speeds. Both officers were transported to the hospital in an unknown condition at this time.
The driver of the Jeep was arrested on suspected of DUI charges.
This is a reminder of the California’s “Move Over” law requires all drivers to move over a lane or, if they are unable to do that safely, slow down when they see flashing lights on law enforcement and emergency vehicles, Caltrans vehicles, and tow trucks.
We will update this story with more information when the CHP’s preliminary accident report is available. Additional details were limited at this time. This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Inland Office.
