The pursuit started about 9:45pm when a California Highway Patrol officer saw a vehicle matching the description who was a suspected in a hit-and-run crash that involved earlier that night.
CHP said the car refused to stop after an officer tried to pull it over. When the suspected driver took off, on Interstate 215 near Washington Street in Colton. With help from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, that was over the suspect vehicle quickly.
The suspect continued onto northbound Interstate 15, through the Cajon Pass, is when officers laid down spike strips along I-15 at the truck scales, The suspect struck a spike strips incapacitating his vehicle. Despite this, he kept fleeing up the 15 freeway, with sparks and smoke billowing from underneath the vehicle.
The suspect stopped, near the top of the Cajon Pass about one mile from Oak Hill Road exit. It was reported he was screaming at law enforcement. After some time, the suspect hopped out from his vehicle and taken into custody at the scene and have been charged with felony hit and run, officials said.
Traffic was stopped for about 20 minutes during the small standoff.
Officials say more charges could be coming and the suspect’s name has not been released.
