CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A very cold powerful winter storm is going to hit Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning. There is a good chance of heavy rain and the snow level could drop to about 2,500 feet, that will impact the Cajon Pass.

Southern California Weather Force has issued a Long Range Travel Advisory for Interstate 15, Highway 18, and Hwy 138 effective on Tuesday morning December 14, 2021. A low elevation snowfall risk that would impact the mountains, Cajon Pass, and high desert areas with a snow level down to 2,500 feet. An arctic air mass bears down toward the area along with severe weather for the inland valley areas with heavy rainfall and flooding risk.

Winter storms can bring not only large amounts of rain/snow, but also extremely cold temps, high gusty winds, freezing rain and ice. This can cause downed trees, make roads or walkways incredibly dangerous, and cause power outages that can last for several days. Public transportation can be affected on Tuesday and schools and childcare facilities might be closed. On top of all this, winter storms increase the risks of car accidents and full freeway closures.

If you need to drive up or down the pass Tuesday, I would say just say home it’s not worth it. There is no job worth your life, being at home will be the safest place to be. If you travel the Cajon Pass or Mountain Pass by Stateline make sure you have a full tank of gas if you become stranded on the freeway. The timing of this storm won’t be until Monday afternoon.

CHP and Caltrans will try to keep the Cajon Pass lanes free of snow, but if the weather turns bad and cars and trucks become stuck, they will close the freeway down. CHP also says make sure you have a full tank of gas if you are coming up or down the Cajon Pass in bad weather.
