IRWINDALE, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A major stretch of the 210 Freeway in Irwindale will be closed for a full five days starting Wednesday night

Repairs of the 210 bridge hinge over the San Gabriel River will require a 126-hour closure of the westbound 210 Freeway in Irwindale that will start Wednesday July 20 at 11pm. and is expected to last through Tuesday morning July 26 at 4am*.

San Gabriel River Bridge is some 50 years old and while being safe to drive over, certain parts of the bridge have been long overdue for improvements.

During the closure, workers will be replacing two hinges that lock the bridge in place, along with giving the bridge a higher concrete median, new steel rebar and stronger set concrete on two of two, 20-feet-by-90-feet bridge decks.

“The bridge essentially is 811-feet-long. “The challenge in this project is not just the upgrade of the hinges — two hinges — hinge four and six, but we have to do it for the first time in California.”

The westbound lanes of the 210 Freeway will be fully closed from Irwindale Avenue up to the 605 Freeway. The eastbound side will be shrunk down to three lanes in between the 605 Freeway and Irwindale Avenue. The Irwindale on- and off-ramps, the westbound 210 Freeway’s connectors to the 605 Freeway, and the Mt. Olive on-ramp to the eastbound 210 Freeway will also be shut down during the closure.

Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol are anticipating the closure will cause major delays, and are urging drivers to consider working from home during the closure. And if driving is absolutely necessary, taking alternate routes like the 10 or 60 freeways.

*Times can subject to change and could go longer or start earlier. Schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather or construction issues.

The eastbound 210 full freeway closure will be happening on Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 11pm through Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 4am, when work on the eastbound side of the 210 at the 605 and Irwindale Avenue will take place.
