SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Over 1,100 people were arrested by the California Highway Patrol in connection of driving under the influence over the Labor Day weekend.

DUI arrests were also slightly up this Labor Day weekend, 1,140 versus 1,064 in 2023, CHP said.

“CHP officers kept watch over California’s crowded roadways over the holiday weekend, vigilantly monitoring for instances of impaired driving while implementing a statewide Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP),” the agency said in a statement.

The operation reportedly ran from 6:01 p.m. on Aug. 30, through 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 2, Labor Day. During the 72-hour holiday enforcement effort, CHP officers made over 1,140 arrests for driving under the influence and issued more than 27,000 citations, with over 16,200 for speeding. Then 851 for seatbelt violations and 1,731 for distracted driving. Nearly 500 drivers were cited for traveling 100 mph or more.

“Everyone’s safety is our top priority, so make responsible choices. Drive sober, stay focused and help keep our roads safe for all who use them,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee in a statement ahead of the holiday weekend. “Your decisions behind the wheel can save lives – yours and others.”

The traffic fatality rate in California varies by year but generally falls between 9 and 10 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In recent years, the state has averaged around 3,500 to 4,000 road deaths annually.
