DETROIT, MI. (Pain In The Pass) >> GM is recalling 721,000 SUVs and trucks worldwide due to engine issues that could lead to a loss of power and boost the risk of a crash, the company announced on Tuesday.

The Detroit automaker is recalling 2021 through 2024 model-year Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles with 6.2L V8 gas engines only.

GM said the connecting rod and crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage or failure. The recall includes nearly 600,000 vehicles in the United States.

Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into GM trucks and SUVs with the 6.2-liter V-8. This came after the federal agency received 39 complaints regarding engine failures. While that investigation is still open, GM is voluntarily recalling about 721,000 vehicles worldwide (about 598K U.S. models) with possibly defective engines. The automaker has also issued a stop-sale order for affected vehicles in dealer inventory.

As a result, all the vehicles involved in the recall will need to be inspected. If they pass the inspection, the dealer will replace the oil filter, oil cap, and add higher-viscosity 0W-40 oil, according to GM’s internal service bulletin for the recall. Engines that don’t pass inspection will be repaired or replaced.

Although manufacturers can make every effort to notify affected customers about recalls, it’s not always possible. So, if you want to check if your car has an active recall, sometimes you need to do it yourself. Checking for a new or old recalls on your vehicle is easier than you think. Enter your vehicles VIN number at NHTSA Recall Site or checktoprotect.org to see if your vehicle has a open recall.
