SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> The California Highway Patrol is dedicated to promoting child passenger safety and ensuring every child is correctly secured during every trip. National Child Passenger Safety Week focuses on educating parents and caregivers about the importance of proper car seats and providing the right fit for a child’s age, weight, and height.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children in the U.S., but proper use of child safety seats significantly reduces the risk of injury and fatality. The CHP offers free car seat inspections and hands-on training year-round, with trained experts available to assist.
California Law:
✅ Children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear-facing car seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds OR is 40 or more inches tall. The child shall be secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat. (California Vehicle Code Section 27360).
✅ Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.
✅ Children who are under 8 years of age but has reached 4’9” in height may be secured by a safety belt. (California Vehicle Code Section 27363).
✅ Safety experts recommend that children remain in the back seat until they reach 13 years of age (NHTSA).
✅ Passengers who are 16 years of age and over are subject to California’s Mandatory Seat Belt law (California Vehicle Code Section 27315).
