CAJON PASS, CA. ( Pain In The Pass) >> A group of burglars broke into a BNSF Railway (Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway) freight train Monday evening, triggering an major investigation.
The incident occurred at about 6:22pm August 10, 2026, in the Cajon Pass near Cajon Boulevard and Cleghorn Road. The freight train was reportedly heading north up the Cajon Pass.
Emergency response officials responded to at least two locations the one near Cleghorn Rd and the second one between Highway 138 (Hesperia side) and the 15 Freeway on 3N45 Fire Road near Summit Valley Road.
BNSF Railway officers encountered individuals suspected of burglarizing rail cars and officers attempted to deter the activity near Cleghorn Rd. During the incident, a suspect fired a handgun in the direction of a BNSF officer. The officer was not struck or injured.
The train continued northbound before eventually stopping in the Summit Valley area. Deputies and BNSF officers established a perimeter around the train and, with assistance from two San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department helicopters and a California Highway Patrol airplane overhead and personnel from the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division (SED), they conducted a search of rail cars believed to have been entered.
No suspects were located during the search. Several vehicles and individuals encountered in the surrounding area were investigated and determined to be unrelated to the incident.
No deputies or BNSF officers were injured.
The investigation is ongoing and the Sheriff’s Rural Crimes Task Force has assumed the investigation.
