SAN BERNARDINO, CA (Pain In The Pass) >> A brush fire that broke out early Thursday morning in San Bernardino on October 24, off the side of Highway 18 in the Waterman Canyon area.

The fire is called the Old Water Fire, which began at 2 am. The fire was moving south and northeast into the Coldwater Canyon area. At 4am flames were heading toward several homes along Mariposa Lane with about 80 homes under evacuation orders.

The fast-moving blaze also forced the closure of Highway 18 in San Bernardino between 40th Street and Highway 138 in Crestline.

At 9am the fire laid down with no visible smoke.

Upsate at 1pm the fire flare up increased the acreage to 105. Containment is 30%.

Update At 6pm Hwy 18 and 40th St will re-open to traffic in both directions. Streets within the mandatory evacuation area remain closed.

No injuries or structure losses had been reported as of 3pm.

A Red Cross evacuation center has been set up at San Gorgonio High School, at 2299 Pacific St. in San Bernardino. City animal control, 333 W Chandler Place, has offered to house smaller animals temporarily. Anyone with horses or livestock can contact animal control about space availability.

The cause of that fire remains under investigation.

This fire has brought back bad memories in the same area, tomorrow Friday, October 25, is the 16th anniversary of the Old Fire, which ignited in the same area in Old Waterman Canyon Road in San Bernardino.
