One Killed, Head-On Collision On Hwy 138

PHELAN, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> One person is dead and three people were rushed to the hospital, one of them by helicopter after a serious head-on collision on Highway 138, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino Fire Department received calls of a head-on crash with four vehicles total involved.

The crash was reported on the Highway 138 by Wimmer Rd. between Rancho Del La Garto and Mantova Dr. This happened at about 12:18pm Saturday afternoon on January 9, 2021.

A witness stated the driver of the dark green Honda Accord was speeding driving reckless, on eastbound Hwy 138 and passing vehicles on opposite side of the highway. The Honda hit the black Lexus IS 250, then collided head-on with a white Ford F-150 pickup truck, then a black Jeep SUV. The Jeep landed on it’s side. Both people inside the Honda were ejected from the vehicle.

When CHP and firefighters responded to the scene, there were two victims on the ground. Firefighters requested a medical helicopter to transport the male passenger of the Honda to a local hospital. The medical helicopter landed at the scene. Mercy Air #22 airlifted the passenger to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center with serious condition. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The Honda was reported to be cut in half.

Two other people were reported to be transported by ground ambulance. A male driver in the Honda and a male driver of the Ford F-150 were transported to a local hospitals both unknown conditions at this time.

The drivers/passengers in the other vehicles didn’t suffer any injuries.

CHP investigators have not yet determined what caused the crash besides speeding/reckless driving. This could be a DUI incident. There are reports the driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs.

This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Inland Office.
