NEWBERRY SPRINGS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A man accused of stabbing, carjacking, and evading police in San Bernardino County faces several criminal charges after a long police chase on Interstate 15.
Authorities arrested a man after they said he stabbed a driver, he had been offered a ride from. Then stole his vehicle, and fled the scene. Phillip Martinez, 31, was booked Monday into the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto on suspicion of carjacking and evading police with disregard for safety.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the scene at 10:46am Monday April 26, 2021, at the Shell gas station on Minneola/Sunrise Canyon Road in Newberry Springs.
According to sheriff’s spokesperson Cindy Bachman, a 52-year-old man had been driving a rental car and offered Martinez a ride from Las Vegas to California through an online group. While heading south on the Interstate 15, Martinez told the victim to stop, so the victim drove to the Shell station. Once there, Martinez stabbed the victim in the hand, and got out of the vehicle. Then Martinez fled toward the freeway in the victim’s rental car a white Toyota Corolla sedan with Florida plates.
The victim immediately notified authorities. The California Highway Patrol spotted the vehicle north of Stoddard Wells Road on southbound I-15 and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The suspect eventually stopped at 11:45am on the freeway near the Sierra Avenue exit in the city of Fontana where he was arrested without incident.
The stabbing victim was treated at Barstow Community Hospital. Details on his condition were not given.
Martinez is expected to appear in court and is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
