SAN BERNARDINO, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Fire crews were battling a brush fire burning near Highway 18 in Waterman Canyon Monday morning.

U.S. Forest Service firefighters along with the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the fire that broke out about 10:53am. near Old Waterman Canyon Road. The brush fire scorched at least 34 acres and had a rapid rate of spread, according to officials. The fire dubbed the Peak Fire and the of the fire was caused by vehicle fire as result of single vehicle crash.

By around 2pm firefighters said they had stopped the fire’s forward rate of spread. A few structures on Old Waterman Canyon Rd are threatened. Highway 18 was closed from 40th Street to Hwy 138 in Crestline.

Update at 5pm the fire was holding at 34 acres, 10% contained. Firefighters continue to mop-up this evening. Crews are expected to work through the night and this week to bring full containment.
