BARSTOW, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A Barstow firefighter who was handling a traffic accident in lanes on Interstate 15 Sunday morning was hit by a vehicle passing through the crash scene.

The crash was reported at about 4:53am, Sunday December 5, 2021, between L Street and Highway 58 exits. California Highway Patrol and firefighters from Barstow Fire Department responded to the traffic crash. Reports from the CHP traffic log stated the crash was reported to be a two vehicle crash in the fast lane with debris in the #2 and #3 lanes.

While firefighter crews were treating patients from the crash and prepared for clearing the scene a vehicle traveling at highway speeds struck one firefighter. That firefighter sustained major injuries and was immediately treated by his crew to help sustain his life. He was then transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center by Mercy Air #66 from Barstow Community Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Every state now has move over laws on their books, generally requiring drivers to give at least one-lane buffer to stopped emergency vehicles. These laws require drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles that are displaying flashing lights – including tow truck wreckers or utility vehicles displaying flashing lights traveling in the same direction to vacate the lane closest to them if safe and possible to do so, or to at least SLOW DOWN. “Remember it could be you or your loved ones they are helping”.

This crash is currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Barstow Office. CHP says additional information will be updated as it becomes available. Please check back for updates on this incident.
