VICTORVILLE, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Victorville City Firefighters were called to Victor Valley Regional Composting Facility Athens Services at 20055 Shay Road, in Victorville Sunday afternoon.
The fire was reported just after 3:30pm Sunday January 29, 2023 a call was received for smoke coming from the facility. With help of gusty winds did help spread the flames in the facility grounds. VFD called for a second alarm response with two additional water tenders to the scene. Also assisting on the scene were equipment and personnel from San Bernardino County Fire Department.
Large piles of compost are burning inside plant boundaries. “Pretty good flames” seen on north side, with a possible threat to vegetation in the nearby Mojave River bottom.
Food Waste, Wood, and Yard Waste are house at this facility that is owned by Athens Services.
No update on the fire contamination and the air quality in the surrounding communities. Smoke and the smell may been blowing around into the Victorville, Apple Valley and Barstow communities.
Firefighters will be remain in the area for mop-up operations for hours and next day or two to make sure no hot spots flare up. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No structures were threatened.
