California Highway Patrol and Barstow Fire Department were called to the scene. Emergency dispatcher said the trailer caught fire about 11:05pm on Wednesday May 30, 2023 in the northbound right shoulder just before Lenwood Road exit.
When the semi stop on the right shoulder, flames were coming from rear-end of the trailer brakes/tires area. Minutes later the flames reach the trailer. Before the fire department were on scene flames were spreading to the nearby brush and trees.
The driver was able to detach the tractor from the trailer to save the tractor cab from catching fire.
The trailer was fully loaded and was not described in the traffic log. Officials said the trailer has burned to the ground. Firefighters, hazardous material, and tow truck crews remain at the scene early Thursday morning.
The freeway was closed in the northbound direction at 11:25pm until the fire was out. Two lanes were reopened about a hour later.
The cause of the big rig tractor fire is unknown at this time. There is a report it came from rear axles of the trailer. No injuries were reported.
