MILWAUKEE, WI, (Pain In The Pass) >> Harley-Davidson Inc. is recalling more than 65,000 Softail motorcycles due to a potentially suspension part failure.

Harley-Davidson is recalling all 2018-2023 Softail models. The company said there’s potential for a fastener that secures the shock absorber to break, causing damage to the rear tire and loss of tire pressure.

Of the 65,000 bikes recalled Harley-Davidson estimates about 1% have the defect, which could cause a crash if the contact between the rear shock absorber and tire goes undetected.

Harley-Davidson will mail notification letters to Softail owners by Tuesday, September 5 and authorized dealers will replace the fasteners free of charge.

Some of the following model years` and motorcycles model and are subject to the recall:

  • 2018-2019 FLDE
  • 2018-2021 FLHC
  • 2018-2023 FLHCS
  • 2018 and 2023 FLCS ANV
  • 2020-2023 FXLRS
  • 2022-2023 FXLRST
  • 2022 FXRST Softail

If you recently purchased a Softail model, HD said all models shipped after August 7 contain revised hardware.

Drivers may detect the issue in one of three ways: noise from under the seat, a loose rear shock adjuster when the seat is removed, or “non-typical wear” on the rear tire.

Although manufacturers can make every effort to notify affected customers about recalls, it’s not always possible. So, if you want to check if your car has an active recall, sometimes you need to do it yourself. Checking for a new or old recalls on your vehicle is easier than you think. Enter your vehicles VIN number at NHTSA Recall Site or  checktoprotect.org to see if your vehicle has a open recall.
