At about 3:59pm on Saturday October 14, 2023, CHP and San Bernardino County Fire Department crews responded to a crash located at the intersection of Highway 138 and Hess Road.

The collision involved a silver GMC Sierra pickup truck with major front-end damage that landed off the roadway into a drainage ditch off the right shoulder. The other vehicle, was reported to be a grey Chevrolet Express van with major passenger side damage, that overturned onto its side blocking the eastbound lanes of Hwy 138.

An off-duty firefighter was one of the first on scene and reported that one person was pinned underneath the van and one person trapped inside.

Firefighters rendered aid to all crash victims involved in the collision. Then they requested two helicopters to transport two people with unspecified major injuries. One person was transported by Mercy Air #2 from the scene to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and the second person by Reach Air #43 from the scene to Loma Linda University Medical Center. One person was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

The cause of this crash is unknown at this time but looks to be a T-bone collision or a head-on collision.

It is unclear whether the drive and the passenger of the Chevrolet van was wearing there seatbelts.

One person that was airlifted, sadly succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

We will update this story with more information when the CHP’s preliminary accident report is available. Additional details were limited at this time. This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Inland Office.
