PHELAN, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> San Bernardino County Coroner have released the identity of a 20-year-old Phelan man who was killed in a collision between his ATV quad and an white SUV along Highway 138 last Friday.

Michael Allen Stroup Jr. died at a hospital shortly after the collision, which took place about 12:56pm on Friday June 7, along Highway 138 between Rancho Del La Garto and Kruse Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.

He was riding a four-wheeled ATV, trying to cross Hwy 138 in a southwest direction when he was struck by a 2024 Nissan Rogue, CHP officials said in a written statement.

The SUV was eastbound on the highway at about 70 mph before the collision, officials said.

“As (the ATV) entered the #1 lane of Hwy 138 eastbound, (The SUV driver) applied the brakes and turned to the right in an attempt to avoid a crash, but was unable to do so,” according to the statement. Stroup was thrown from the ATV in the collision.

He was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where he later died.

The driver of the Nissan, was treated for minor injuries, officials said.
