BAKER, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> The Newberry Community Services District is preparing a letter to San Bernardino County regarding the Interstate 15 lithium-ion battery fire and the hazardous container that is still sits next to Interstate 15.
Newberry CSD Director Mike Matson is seen taking photographs Thursday morning on September 26. The lithium-ion container is shown in the background above.
The crash happened just before 7am on July 26, 2024 (over 9 weeks ago) with the California Highway Patrol and the San Bernardino County Fire Department called to an overturned semi tractor trailer about two miles after the Afton Road exit on northbound Interstate 15. This caused I-15 to be closed for two days.
Eventually they drag the trailer off the right shoulder of the freeway into the open desert away from traffic.
The lithium-ion battery container is still considered too hazardous to move on public roads and reported no landfill wants it, said Mike. The container is under the watchful eye of two hazmat personnel at the crash site, 24 hours 7 days a week.
We will keep you updated on the removal of the batteries from the freeway and if San Bernardino County Office can expedite the hazmat clean-up and removal of the batteries trailer.
