SILVERWOOD LAKE, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A large brush fire erupted inside Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area Saturday afternoon.
The blaze was reported around 3:50pm June 28, 2025, inside Silverwood Lake day use/camping area off of Cleghorn Road, according to preliminary information from the California Highway Patrol.
The blaze known as the Lake Fire and quickly went uphill and meet Highway 138 and then jump the highway within minutes with the afternoon gusty winds pushing the flames.
San Bernardino County firefighters said the fire spread at a “dangerous rate” and doubled in size in just one hour. It had the potential of growing to 1,000+ acres.
The fire is burning through very heavy brush that has not be burn in over 20+ years.
At 7pm the fire was updated at 446 acres burned 0% contained.
Update at 9pm the fire burned approximately 478 acres with no containment.
Evacuations and Road Closures:
Evacuations ordered for residents south of Highway 138, between Highway 173 and the 15 Freeway, as the intense flames approached, Cal Fire officials said.

CHP has shut down Highway 138 between Old Mill Road near Crestline and the 15 Freeway. Hwy 173 is closed at Hwy 138 to near Hesperia Lake. Summit Valley Rd closed at Hwy 138.
The Silverwood State Recreation Area will be closed on Sunday, officials announced. “The park may reopen on Monday June 30 after re-evaluation by firefighters and the park rangers. Escorts are planned for park visitors and campers to renter the park to retrieve belongings after 9am Sunday.
It is not clear how the fire was started.
