CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Why is there a California Highway Patrol car going back and forth across the freeway lanes with emergency lights activated?!
They are performing a “traffic break”. Officers use this driving technique in order to slow and/or stop all lanes of traffic for one of many possible reasons. These reasons include, but are not limited to: debris in the roadway ahead, a traffic collision ahead, people standing in lanes ahead, a stalled vehicle blocking lanes ahead, an animal in lanes, police activity, a fire, roadwork by Caltrans, and etc.
What are you supposed to do when you see a patrol car doing a traffic break ahead?
Slow Down and Stay Back! Assume we know something you don’t about the roadway up ahead. DO NOT drive on the shoulder and DO NOT attempt to pass the patrol vehicle with emergency lights flashing. Be prepared to come to a complete stop and stay in your vehicle. We have to mention these warnings because drivers make those mistakes time and time again.
Remember you can be cited if you fail to stay 300 ft behind an emergency vehicle when its lights and or siren are activated. California Vehicle Code 21706.
