PHELAN, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> At least one person was killed in a solo-vehicle crash on Highway 138 early Saturday morning.
The collision was reported at 3am January 24, 2026, on Hwy 138 at Hwy 2 for a report of a solo-vehicle crash. From the California Highway Patrol traffic log said a white unknown car went off the road in the westbound lanes, near the Mountain Top Cafe. The car hit the guardrail and went over the guardrail then slammed into a light pole at high speeds.
First responders arrived to find a driver and a passenger completely pinned inside the vehicle, prompting an immediate heavy-duty rescue and extrication operation. Fire crews worked for an extended period to access the trapped people inside.
One person sustained severe injuries and was taken to a landed zone at the Stater Bros. parking lot in Phelan. This is where Mercy Air 22 Helicopter was on its way and was later cancel for an unknown reason.
Emergency responders upgraded the call to a fatality at around 4:10am. Authorities confirmed at least one death at the scene. The condition of the second person is unknown at this time.
It’s not yet known if high speeds, drugs, or alcohol were involved. We will update this story with more information when the CHP’s preliminary accident report is available. This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Victorville Office.
