MIDWAY REST AREA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A fast-moving weather system swept across parts of Northwestern San Bernardino County region over Interstate 15 Saturday late afternoon, bringing intense rain, thunder, lightning, and gusty winds that flipped semi-trucks.
A large thunderstorm system moved through, which unfolded on August 15, 2026 before 5pm on I-15 freeway and the Midway Rest Area exit. The pop-up thunderstorm caught many drivers off guard due to how quickly the conditions escalated.
The winds arrived quickly, leaving little time for drivers to react.
Events like this are a reminder of how quickly weather can shift in desert regions. While they don’t happen every day, they can develop fast enough to surprise even experienced drivers.
A thunderstorm cell can produce winds around 60 to 80+ mph gusts.
From the California Highway Patrol traffic log stated two semis’ tractor-trailers overturned on southbound I-15 just before the Midway Rest Area and at least two semi-trucks in the rest area.
No injuries were reported.
