CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Five people have been arrested following a two-day search for a train car burglary suspect who allegedly fired at an officer from a moving freight train in the Cajon Pass on Monday, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 6:22pm August 10, 2026, in the Cajon Pass near Cajon Boulevard and Cleghorn Road. The freight train was reportedly heading north up the Cajon Pass.
Emergency response officials responded to at least two locations the one near Cleghorn Rd and the second one between Highway 138 (Hesperia side) and the 15 Freeway on 3N45 Fire Road near Summit Valley Road.
Officers with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) were attempting to stop several suspects allegedly burglarizing railcars Monday evening when one of the suspects, identified as 21-year-old Angel Castro, allegedly fired a handgun in the direction of an officer, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The officer was not struck, and no law enforcement personnel were injured.
The manhunt for the suspects intensified after they were not located when the train stopped in the Summit Valley area.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Department’s Rural Crime Task Force later identified Castro as the suspect accused of firing at the officer and obtained a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder.
Two days later, Castro and four other suspects were located during an operation in the Cajon Pass.
Castro’s vehicle was stopped by authorities, who detained all five suspects.
“During a search of the vehicle, tools used for burglarizing trains were located inside,” the Sheriff’s Department said.
Castro was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, cargo theft and conspiracy to commit a crime.
Jorge Sarmiento Ochoa, Miguel Humberto Grajeda Carrizos, Jesus Jose Grajeda, and Cesar Geovanny Grajeda Medina were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, cargo theft and possession of burglary tools.
All five suspects are Mexican Nationals and were booked into the Central Detention Center, where they remain in custody.
