About 1:20pm Wednesday, a semi tractor-trailer went up in flames on southbound I-15 just after the Devore Road exit. A thick, black plume of smoke blanketed the freeway as crews worked to get the flames under control.

California Highway Patrol said the driver and passenger was able to get out before the blaze spread. Flames engulfed the entire cab and trailer, which was deemed both a total loss.

CHP are still working to determine what the truck was hauling. There were multiple explosions coming from inside the trailer.

A large backup was seen for drivers trying to bypass the semi fire and the lane closures on southbound I-15. The northbound lanes were unaffected.

The southbound lanes of I-215 were closed due to the heavy smoke and flames, but the center divider was reopened at around 4pm.

At 8pm the left lane was reopened and the slow lane and right shoulder will be shut down until the morning.

It was unclear what exactly caused the fire but, all signs point to the rear brakes on the semi cab.
