CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Driver is killed after crashing into the back of a disabled big rig fuel tanker trailer Monday morning.

The crash happened at about 6:44am Monday November 22, 2021. The location was on northbound Interstate 15 about a mile before the Oak Hill Road exit. California Highway Patrol, and San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the traffic crash involving two vehicles, a sliver Hyundai Accent and a big rig with double fuel tankers.

The sliver Hyundai was reported to be speeding and waving in and out of traffic prior to the collision. From a witness stated from the CHP traffic log the driver of the Hyundai went around a different big rig in the #4 lane to pass him in the #5 lane, is when the Hyundai collided into the back of the disabled big rig that was partial blocking the #5 lane.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle that eventually caught fire. With the help of good Samaritans they were able to free the driver from the car before it became fully engulfed in flames. The driver was pulled out unresponsive into the center divider. Life saving measures on scene failed, shortly after they pronounced the driver deceased at the scene.

Firefighters worked quickly to knock down the vehicle fire and prevented it to spread to the fuel trailers. Flame did hit the nearby brush off the right shoulder of the freeway and also stopped at 1/8 acre burned. The fuel trailers were reported to be fully loaded of gasoline/petrol. The tanks were fully intact and not leaking. The big rig driver was not reported to be injured.

Northbound lanes were shut down for about 3 hours as CHP investigated the crash, but it has since reopened.

The incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Inland Office. CHP said additional information will be updated as it becomes available. Additional details were limited at this time.
