HESPERIA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A suspect was arrested in connection to a fatal hit-and-run crash on northbound Interstate 15 Saturday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened on January 22, 2022 at about 3:56am on northbound I-15 between Main Street and Bear Valley Road. The vehicles involved in the hit-and-run crash were a blue Chrysler PT Cruiser that rolled over multiple times. The other driver responsible had fled the scene in what witnesses described as an gray Dodge Ram pickup truck.
The vehicle that rolled from the freeway onto Mariposa Road near Mojave Street. Despite life-saving rescue measures, firefighters and CHP officials said the driver of the vehicle was deceased at the scene.
At 5am CHP located a vehicle matching the description of the suspects vehicle near the Circle K gas station on the corner of Balsam Road and Sitting Bull Street in the city of Victorville. The suspect ran from the truck. Around 6am, the suspect turned himself in at the Hesperia Police Station. The suspect was arrested without incident, according to the CHP Traffic Log.
CHP investigators have not yet determined what caused the crash and why the suspect ran from the scene. This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Victorville Office. CHP says additional information will be updated as it becomes available.
Update on Monday from the CHP office. A 65-year-old woman from Cypress, CA, was driving northbound in her 2006 blue Chrysler PT Cruiser. She was driving directly in front of the driver of the Dodge Ram pickup truck, a 30-year-old male Giovanni Gutierrez from La Puente, CA. He collided into the back of Chrysler PT Cruiser at an unknown high speed. The impact sent the Chrysler PT Cruiser out-of-control, rolling over multiple times off of Interstate 15 landing onto Mariposa Road.
After turning him self in Gutierrez was interviewed and placed under arrest. He’s been charged with murder, hit and run causing serious injury or death, driving under the influence causing death, and also driving under the influence causing serious injury or death with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or greater. The murder charge given to Gutierrez is because he has a prior DUI conviction, meaning he is aware of the consequences that may occur if ever charged with a DUI again, including a person dying.
