High Desert I-15 Drivers Struggling To See New Traffic Lines

HESPERIA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Multiple drivers are saying they’re having a hard time staying in their lanes or picking the correct lane to be in along Interstate 15 in both directions.

The recent $122 million project to rehabilitate and repave the traffic lanes and upgrade the drainage systems on Interstate 15 from Oak Hills Road to Bear Valley Rd. The new traffic patterns are confusing to drivers at times. This time it is very confusing to motorist with the removal of the old traffic lane strips. The contractor hired by Caltrans said the thermo stripe was the first issue (removal of the old traffic lanes). The existing thermo itself was too deep and the removal caused grooves that were too deep. Contractor only did about a mile (~500 stripes) and then they stopped.

Because the existing (old) thermo stripe was too deep, the contractor requested to black out (with paint) the existing white thermo stripe. This request was granted. The blackout works most of the time, but at the right time of day, the reflection of the black can look like the original stripe “ghost stripes”.  The contractor proposed at 3M product to tape over the blackout paint. This is expensive and time consuming. The contractor is tentatively scheduled to test out this product at the worst location sometime this week to see how it works, probably on Friday night into Saturday morning. Also on Friday night they will be filling the old lane grooves with asphalt patch.

Drivers say they can’t see the correct traffic lines. Can you see the correct lane?
