HESPERIA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Man alleged to have set fire over dispute about the family’s property.
The Highway Fire was reported at about 5pm on Friday, July 29, 2022. Just south of Highway 173 near Silverwood Lake.
San Bernardino National Forest Fire Department with help from San Bernardino County, and Cal Fire firefighters were called to the scene. When California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County Sheriff Department were on scene first. They were looking for a male wearing only gray shorts and possibly armed. Firefighters had to stage away from the fire due to law enforcement searching for the suspect and reported shots fired. Highway 173 was closed at Hwy 138 and at Los Flores Road.
At 5:30pm the suspect had been detained by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department.
The winds were gusting about 10 mph in heavy to medium brush. Two helicopters and three airtankers were called to the scene to do some drops.
At 7:30pm the fire had forward progression stopped at about 28 acres burned and three structures lost. Firefighters will remain in the area for mop-up operations though the night to make sure no hot spots flare up.
From what scanner traffic stated the mother of arson suspect tried to murder them last month.
The cause of the fire is reported to be arson.
8am Saturday update on the Highway Fire is still at 28 acres burn with 54% containment. Crews worked diligently through the night and will remain on scene until fire is fully contained.
