The incident happened on southbound I-15 about 2:23pm on Thursday afternoon, about a mile before the Old Highway 58 exit. The semi was carrying an unknown product not listed on the traffic log. This is when the driver noticed one of the rear tires of the trailer was on fire smoking. The driver stopped on the shoulder on the freeway.
The driver was able to detach the tractor from the trailer to save the tractor cab from catching fire.
California Highway Patrol were on scene and block two southbound lanes. CHP receive aid from firefighters from Bartow City Fire Department were called to extinguish the flames. The trailer was a total lost.
It looks like a problem with the rear trailer brakes or a wheel bearing that caused the problem.
No injuries were reported.
