SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A heads up about a new scam targeting toll roads across the nation.

The scam is hitting many phones and emails in an effort to steal information. The texts claim that you owe a toll and will need to make payment or you will face losing your license. It then asks you to take multiple odd steps to receive the link to make payment. The number on this text is very suspicious, the website address is suspicious, and the instructions to make the payment are suspicious.

Remember:

Be sure to ALWAYS stop and think before acting or clicking. Were you expecting this request? Does the link look correct and official?

Do your own research when you are suspicious or receive an unexpected request. Look up the name of the company and find the website yourself. News regarding scams spreads quickly and you will often find articles regarding the scam when you search the name of the company.

Look for red flags. Any messaging with an extreme sense of urgency, threats like fines, penalties, and arrest, and misspellings and poor grammar are major red flags. Lengthy and odd instructions like the link instructions in the image below are a red flag as well. A real business would not do those things.

If you receive a fraudulent text, you can do the following:

  • Mark the message as scam/junk and delete it.
  • Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM).
