CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A car fire ignited brush along northbound I-15 in the Cajon Pass, backing up traffic for several miles Monday afternoon.
The fire started shortly before 11:55am on June 16, 2025, on northbound I-15 about a mile after the Kenwood Avenue exit.
Fire crews responded to a fully engulfed car fire on the right shoulder of the freeway. The fire from the car spread to the vegetation on the shoulder, turning into a brush fire fueled by the afternoon winds and dry brush, burning about 3 acres at 12:30pm.
The fire, which officials have named the Mathews Fire, burned approximately 6 acres of land, and forward rate of spread stopped about at 1pm.
Two right lanes blocked to fight the flames.
Everybody did escape the vehicle before it became fully engulfed. No injuries were reported at the scene. The cause of the vehicle fire is unknown at this time.
