BAKER, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Two people were killed early Sunday morning when a wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle on southbound Interstate 15 just before the Zzyzx Road exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:22am June 29, 2025, when 911 dispatchers began receiving calls of a wrong way driver at around the Zzyzx Rd offramp. The collisions happened on southbound lanes of I-15 freeway with two unconscious drivers and a passenger trapped in their vehicles following a head-on collision. The impact scattered debris across the freeway lane.
According to a written statement from the California Highway Patrol Barstow Office, a 70-year-old man from Temecula was driving a Beige colored Honda Accord sedan northbound in the southbound #1 lane, traveling the wrong way on the freeway.
At the same time, a 33-year-old woman from Henderson, Nevada, was driving a red Kia Niro small SUV southbound in the #1 lane with one male passenger.
The Honda and Kia collided head-on, causing fatal injuries to both drivers. Emergency medical personnel pronounced the 70-year-old Honda driver and the 33-year-old Kia driver dead at the scene.
The male passenger in the Kia sustained injuries and was transported by Mercy Air to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, for treatment.
CHP stated that alcohol and or drugs are not believed to be a factor of the collision.
This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Barstow Office.
