15 Freeway Comprehensive Corridor Study Safety Report is in

CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Transportation Regional Leaders Launch a “Coalition for Our Future” to Advance Urgent Safety Solutions for Interstate 15 Corridor.

Officials on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, announced a new coalition to spur traffic and safety improvements along the I-15 Freeway between the city of Barstow and Henderson, Nevada. This study is to fast-track improvements on one of California’s most dangerous highways.

The Coalition for Our Future – a partnership of regional business, labor and California port leaders – today announced a coordinated push to make 15 Freeway (I-15) safe and more reliable for residents, workers and businesses.

From the study they said, every three days, someone is seriously hurt or killed on the 15 Freeway between Barstow and Las Vegas. The 18-month study will include collaboration with local and state transportation representatives to assess and prioritize needed improvements. Once complete, the study’s recommendations can be incorporated into the regional transportation plan, making the project eligible for state and federal funding to advance critical safety upgrades.

With only are just two San Bernardino County fire stations along that stretch between Baker and Stateline up to 87-mile one way travel response, according to the coalition.

San Bernardino County Supervisor Curt Hagman said. “To support a safer, smoother, more reliable I-15 for everyone — families, workers, travelers and the industries that fuel our regional economy.” At this time there is no time table to start fixing the 15 freeway

According to the coalition, the I-15 helps bring in $3.3 billion in local economic activity, from Vegas-bound tourists making pit stops in San Bernardino County to more than 7,500 trucks a day bring goods between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Traffic snarls day and night along the corridor, causing delays that slow delivery of goods and miss work or just longer commutes. Emissions from idling vehicles add to climate change and worsen air pollution in communities near the 15, the coalition added. Then there are the accidents to make things worst.

From a different report, the stretch in San Bernardino County was listed as the deadliest highway in California and in the United States, with a 77% spike in fatalities between 2018 and 2024.

Besides adding capacity to the 15, the study might recommend more fire stations along the corridor with more electric vehicle charging stations to help drivers caught up in freeway closures due to accidents or roadwork.

Once finished, the study’s suggestions can be added to regional transportation plans, making them eligible for state and federal funding. But getting that funding is no sure bet, with scores of projects competing for a limited amount of state and federal dollars. The coalition argues that the region’s size demands money to fix the 15.

This study could add construction and more delays, but more efficient for everyone in the long run.
