Cargo Train Theft in Devore Stopped and One Suspect was Hit by a Vehicle after Fleeing on the 215 Freeway

DEVORE, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Three men were arrested and face several charges after they were caught after a traffic stop after they allegedly stolen cargo out of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train Tuesday night, authorities announced.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies from Central Station responded around 11:04pm May 5, 2026, to assist BNSF Railroad Police following reports of approximately 15 individuals riding on a freight train in an area known for cargo theft.

As deputies arrived, a Chevrolet Suburban SUV sped past them, prompting a traffic stop. The driver initially failed to yield before eventually pulling over on southbound Interstate 215 near Palm Ave/Kendall Dr. When the vehicle stopped, about 10 occupants fled on foot, scattering into nearby areas and across the freeway.

One suspect, identified as Fernando Barrza, 19-year-old, transient from San Bernardino, was detained near the vehicle without incident. A second suspect, Rodrigo Luna Arredondo, 32-year-old, also a transient from San Bernardino, was captured after a brief foot pursuit.

During the incident, a third unidentified adult male was struck by a passing vehicle while attempting to cross the 215 freeway. He was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Deputies located stolen cargo from the train inside the suspect vehicle. The Sheriff’s Rural Crimes Task Force responded and handled the cargo theft investigation.

Barrza was booked into the Central Detention Center, while Luna Arredondo was booked into the West Valley Detention Center. All three will face charges of possession of stolen property and conspiracy to commit a crime.
