SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> California Highway Patrol officers will be ramping up patrols on state highways and freeways across the state beginning Thursday to catch drunk and drug-impaired drivers, as part of the agency’s annual Fourth of July weekend crackdown.
The statewide holiday enforcement period will begin at 6pm Thursday and conclude at 11:59pm on Sunday, during which all available officers will hit the streets for targeted patrols.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said officers will concentrate on speed deterrence, deploying the new “Incognito CHP Vehicles” low-profile cruisers to identify drivers engaged in dangerous maneuvers.
“Reckless driving and speeding continue to endanger lives on California’s roadways,” Duryee said. “As families and friends travel this holiday weekend, we urge everyone to slow down, be considerate of others and make responsible choices behind the wheel. Getting there safely is what matters most.”
During last year’s Independence Day enforcement period, officers arrested 1,311 motorists statewide on suspicion of DUI, compared to 1,336 arrests during the 2024 campaign, according to the CHP.
Seven people were killed and about 400 were injured in crashes within the CHP’s jurisdiction during the 2025 Fourth of July weekend.
Also, all municipal police departments throughout the counties will be carrying out saturation patrols through the holiday weekend to snare DUI suspects and other traffic scofflaws.
Whether heading to a fireworks show or returning home from a family gathering, the CHP urges everyone to buckle up, slow down, designate a sober driver and, in case of an emergency, call 9-1-1.
The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service and Security.
