SAN BERNARDINO, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> California Highway Patrol officers placed themselves in harm’s way early Friday morning to prevent a potentially devastating crash.
The officers, concerned about the safety of other drivers, positioned their patrol vehicles in the path of a wrong-way driver on northbound Interstate 215 in San Bernardino. CHP dispatch received calls just after 2am February 17, 2023. The was of a wrong-way driver in a Nissan Altima heading south on the northbound 215 at the Palm Avenue/Kendall Dr. offramp.
Officers performed a traffic break on I-215 just north of University Parkway exit to protect drivers from the wrong way car. Then, they noticed the driver had turned around. The officers then rammed the wrong way car, described as a Nissan Altima. It came to a rest along an embankment, and the driver exited the car and fled on foot.
Officers gave chase, and took the suspect into custody. The driver, identified only as a 20-year-old San Bernardino resident, was taken into custody. He was booked on charges of driving under the influence.
The suspect was uninjured in the collision, but they transported him to Loma Linda University Medical Center for further evaluation.
Officer Perez and Officer Severin which successfully halted the wrong way driver, saving innocent lives from injury and potential death.
