The York Fire was reported about 12:09pm July 28, 2023, Friday afternoon. The cause of the fire is still undetermined. There was a storm cell on Thursday in this area, a lightning strike may have sparked it into a fast wild-land fire. This fire is burning in a section of the Mojave National Preserve east of Cima on Maruba Road and New York Mountain Rd. Not too far from the Dome Fire burn scare back in 2020.

The high temperature nearby was reported to be over 110 degrees about 50 miles away in the town of Baker. Bureau of Land Management, San Bernardino County Fire Department, and Clark County Fire Department are working together on the wild-land fire. Very hot temperatures with gusty winds is not helping to stop the spread.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Officials said late Saturday night that three unoccupied structures, including the National Park Service-owned Kousch House in Caruthers Canyon, were destroyed by the fire.

The Mojave National Preserve is enormous, 1.6 million acres that are mostly protected by federal land within the Mojave National Preserve. The preserve is between Interstate 15 to the north, Interstate 40 to the south and the California-Nevada border to the east.

Update on the fire: Nipton Rd Hwy 164 and Hwy 95 in Searchlight, NV are now closed due to the fire spreading into Nevada causing hazardous driving conditions. Ivanpah, Hart Mine Road, and Walking Box Ranch Roads are also closed in Mojave.

Update on Monday the fire is 77,000 acres burned and still 0% contained. Good news the fire slow down

As of 6am Tuesday morning, the York Fire is at 80,437 acres and 23% containment.
