BAKER, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy died after suffering a medical emergency while participating in the 2026 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay race, officials announced.
The deputy, assigned to the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station, was among numerous law enforcement personnel representing their agencies at the annual event when the medical emergency occurred, according to a statement shared by the department on social media.
Despite receiving medical care, the deputy ultimately died from their injuries, officials said. The deputy’s family has been notified, and the department said it has been coordinating with loved ones to provide support and resources.
“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our San Dimas Sheriff’s Deputy,” the department said in its statement.
Officials described the deputy as a 13-year veteran whose loss is being felt across the LASD community.
The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay is an annual long-distance relay race that draws teams from law enforcement agencies across the country.
No additional details about the deputy’s death were immediately released.
Update the deputy has been ID as 30-year-old Levi Vargas.
