A 4-year-old girl died following a collision. The driver of the vehicle she was in stopped to render aid to a motorist involved in a separate crash in the Cajon Pass Wednesday night.

California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino Fire Department received calls of a crash. It was reported on southbound Interstate 15 before Highway 138 exit. The crash happened at about 7:55pm Tuesday on March 23, 2021.

The vehicles involved in the crash were a black Hyundai Sonata, a sliver Kia Soul, and a Ford Explorer in which the child was in, according to the California Highway. On arrival, firefighters located the Hyundai with heavy damage after hitting the guardrail, blocking the #1, and #2 lanes. The Kia had major front-end damage blocking the #1 lane. The Ford had major damage.

Before the fatal crash, the driver of the Ford stopped to render aid to the Hyundai driver after witnessing a single-vehicle crash. The Hyundai came to rest in the center median and partially in the #1 lane. The driver of the Hyundai was reported to be speeding prior to the crash. CHP officials said the driver of the ford stopped ahead of the Hyundai. The driver briefly exited the Ford to render aid to those in the Hyundai before getting back in his vehicle with the child. The Kia hit the Hyundai and also the Ford at full freeway speed, from reports both vehicles were black out for unknown reason.

A 4-year-old child from the Ford was taken to a local hospital in serious condition following the crash. Where she died several hours later. Also the driver a female of the Kia Soul was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. From reports she has a fractured vertebrae, a broken clavicle, and bumps and bruises. No other injures were reported.

All southbound lanes were temporarily blocked for about 30 minutes. CHP issued a SIG Alert for the #1 and #2 lanes for about a hour. All lanes were reopened by 9:33pm.

This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Inland Office. CHP says additional information will be updated as it becomes available.
