California Highway Patrol began receiving call of gravel on the freeway about 6:39am Thursday September 14, 2023, on the CHP traffic log. The spill left a layer of loose gravel across all the traffic lanes on southbound I-15 just before Base Line Road exit.

Lanes were shut down during the morning rush hour. Caltrans crews were able to move the loose gravel with brooms and shovels out of the traffic lanes. A street sweeper followed.

All lanes were open by 11:30pm, the CHP said.

CHP said it was not able to locate the semi that shattered the gravel on the freeway. CHP is assuming the truck driver inadvertently hit an inside-the-cab lever that released the gravel.

CHP was unaware of any accidents or damage caused by the gravel.

Authorities aren’t holding out much hope of the driver coming forward.

We will update this story with more information when the CHP’s preliminary accident report is available. Additional details were limited at this time. This incident will be under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Rancho Cucamonga Office.
